Shaman's Moon: A Stoner McTavish Mystery
Published in Paperback by New Victoria Pub (November, 1998)
Average review score:

Brilliantly crafted mysteryAgain Dreher brings us to a place where we discover new worlds and a deep respect and love for our own creative powers and those of the larger realm. Shaman's Moon won the LAMBDA literary award this year for best lesbian mystery and it is a richly deserved honor. Finally, a book is honored that explores more than our sexual side. It must be her work as a clinical psychologist that enhances her compassion and empathy for her characters. This book is several cuts above the rest.
Alternative EmpowermentSarah Dreher is one of the most well-intended authors I have read. Every novel presents us with endearing lesbian role models and situations that promote the healing and empowering of the lesbian psyche. For some, this novel could offend because that very empowerment comes at the expense of Jesus Christ and born-again Christians, but this is intentional and perhaps necessary. The novel's power comes from the splicing of female-friendly psychology and religion onto the campfire ghost story. Maybe Dreher falls short by replacing religious scepticism with shamanistic belief, but there is no godless alternative that's any less a matter of belief as she so well demonstrates in Stoner's inner struggles.

Starry Starry Night: Provincetown's Response to the AIDS Epidemic
Published in Paperback by Brookline Books (May, 1998)
Average review score:

Moving, poignant, worthwhile!A preliminary aside: take the whiny tone of the Kirkus Reviewer's comments (above) with a very large grain of salt. Then read this book. It goes far beyond the depth of others with similar goals. Its power resides not only in its subject matter but also in its empathetic and thoughtful treatment of those who have provided the interviews on which the book is based. Fine, fine work indeed.
A beautiful account of the spiritual triumph over AIDS.In recording the stories of one community's response to the AIDS pandemic, the authors have captured the essense of the human spirit as it faces catestrophic circumstances. Starry Night is not just the record of Provincetown's response to AIDS; it is a wonderfully written account of how people embrace people when confronted by adversity. It is a story of place and of people and it transcends both of these to chronical something much larger than one community on a 'spit of land' at the edge of America.

Streets of Hope : The Fall and Rise of an Urban Neighborhood
Published in Hardcover by South End Press (May, 1994)
Average review score:

An inside look at community developmentI witnessed much of the transformation described in this book and it is remarkably accurate. This should serve as a guide for community organizers seeking to work in neglected neighborhoods. Too bad Peter Medoff is no longer with us.
Success story in community development, w/difficult oddsA little too much detail. However, this is an inspiring success story about a community in very bad shape, that turned itself around totally, working "from the inside out". Well known in the field of community development, in my area.

Thomas Hutchinson and the Origins of the American Revolution (American Social Experience Series, 38)
Published in Hardcover by New York University Press (January, 1999)
Average review score:

Dr. Walmsley's workI just ordered this book and waiting for it to arrive. I have no clue as to what kinnda stuff this book deals with but i cant wait to see Dr. Walmsley's work. This guy is a genious and has a great sense of humour. I have a History test tomorrow in his class which I am definatley going to fail. Ahh i wish i would've studied.
Walmsley offers a whole new view of pre-revolutionary BostonThis is a great book for anyone who is interested in a more dynamic view of politics in pre-revolutionary Boston. Walmsley demonstrates, in interesting and readable prose, how previous assessments of Hutchinson have too often been influenced by the biased and facile rhetoric of his Bostonian peers. Dr. Walmsley successfully portrays Hutchinson as a political and social actor and victim of the tumultuous Boston scene. Through his writing we are able to conceive of Hutchinson as a man who acted for both personal and political reasons. Hutchinson cannot be so easily characterized as simply a placeman for the British. Neither was he a villain who delighted in crushing Boston's radical crowd. Rather, Walmsley shows that Hutchinson was a very human figure who often found himself caught between the intransigence of British colonial policy and the self-serving rhetoric of the Boston radical elite. I recommend this book to both laymen and professionals alike.

Trout Streams of Southern New England: An Angler's Guide to the Watersheds of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island (Trout Streams of Southern New England, 1st Ed)
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (January, 2003)
Average review score:

This is how a fishing guidebook should be!Excellent book! Not only does the author spell out, in complete detail, the best trout streams in Southern New England, he provides basic maps of all the areas mentioned as well as a list of the feeder streams as alternatives to the main rivers he discusses, if you want to have a better chance of not running into anyone else while on the water. In most cases, he also includes a listing of essential flies (including sizes) that you should have if you want to catch the fish. I've planned several day-trips using this book alone and have absolutely no complaints. All the info he provides is clear & accurate. If you live in MA, CT, or RI and love to flyfish, GET THIS BOOK! You won't be sorry you did.
A terrific guide for fly fishing in Southern New England. In Trout Streams Of Southern New England, native New Englander and experienced angler Tom Fuller presents a trout fisherman's guide to the streams, rivers, lakes and ponds in southern New England with all of their variety and fertility sustaining trout year-round. Trout Streams Of Southern New England features 27 maps of the major watersheds, complete access directions, up-to-date information on regulations and stream conditions, recommended patterns to match the hatches, hatch charts and fly recipes. Trout Streams Of Southern New England is informative, practical, and a terrific guide for fly fishing day trips, weekends, or extended vacations.

Where to Eat - Fall/Winter 1999
Published in Paperback by Spire Group (01 November, 1999)

Premiere guide to Boston diningThe only thing better than the outstanding art design of this up and coming guide to dining in Boston and Cambridge is in fact the restaurants chosen for this delightful publication. All of Boston's favorite restaurants are featured, with map, menus, and a picture of the dining room included. Restaurants are grouped by location, which is helpful when you have an area of town in mind. All in all I place its value up there with my Zagat's guide to dining in Boston, and find that these two publications compliment each other nicely.
When you're stuck, this book really helps out!I bought this book in the middle of a book buying spree. Unsureat first, it is now an essential part of my dining guidecollection. My girlfriend and I use it quite often. The sidebars with sample menus and other tidbits of important information like hours and dress code are really helpful. I've discovered many new restaurants with this guide. Highly recommended if you live in or around Boston, and even if you plan on visiting the city for vacation. Thanks for the great dining publication!

Kelley Takes You ThereOn page one Nancy J. Kelley transported me to a place and time in Old New England that has never felt more real. And her brilliant story about the loving, complex, smart and courageous Hannah kept me there throughout. This is a book ear marked for all my nieces and nephews for Christmas 2002, but make no mistake: this wonderful story is also for adults who wish to be treated to a beautifully written novel about a fascinating time in Boston's history. Write on, Nancy Kelley!
Wonderfully Done!Great story line, captures your interest immediately. Certain to have young readers enjoy a bit of Bay State history. Terrific cover. Should become a classic!

Published in Paperback by Ambassador Books Inc (December, 1999)
Average review score:

Excellent Reading! The Pride of Worcester...This is a 'must have' for the train enthusiast and history buff alike. The author has outdone herself with outstanding photography of Union Station and was able to create a history of Worcester Mass, to be read again and again, through the use of old photos and spoken word. Highly Recommeded!
A must read!!!I found this book to be extremely fascinating and well written. Its Author, gives a warm and welcomed nostalgic view of what life was like in a small yet florishing Town, back in the early nineteen hundreds and beyond. Throughout its pages it recaptures the splendor and thrill of ones first train ride in Worcester Massachusetts. Cherished memories indeed! Also, through these pages and its beautifully portrayed pictures, it memorializes "The Union Station, The Monument and The Memories." My sincere congratulations to the Author for this wonderful expression of written and pictoral art!!!

Your Guide To Public Golf Courses
Published in Paperback by Green Line Publishing, Inc. (August, 2000)
Average review score:

God what a great little book! This is definately one item that every public course golfer in eastern MA should have ( no, you can't borrow mine! ). Any question you'd have about any course within an hour or two's drive is answered here. Directions, greens fee info, course ratings, tee time info, course descriptions and more. Whoever put this book together has really done a service for golfers throughout the region. There may be two feet of snow on the ground as I'm writing this ( 3/10/01 ) but I've already started my wish list of "must play" courses for 2001; all taken from the pages of YOUR GUIDE TO PUBLIC GOLF COURSES.
Great giftAll the information you need in a size that easily fits into your golf bag. A perfect resource for golfing in New England including interesting highlights of the courses

Zagat Survey 1998 Boston Restaurants (Annual)
Published in Paperback by Zagat Survey, LLC (December, 1997)
Average review score:

A Must-Have.Right now, my social life is pathetically nonexistent, but if you're looking for a guide to local eateries for that special first date, this guide is absolutely priceless. It has all the information you need to know about the most popular and acclaimed restaraunts in the local area. The book doesn't dig deep and tap into other, smaller places that may have passed the radar screen, but it's still an important guide that's as essential as a dictionary.
Useful and democratic restaraunt guideThe Zagat guide gives a good general overview of the Boston restaraunt scene, with ratings and quotations submitted by diners themselves. What a great idea!! It also has excellent crossreferenced indices. The one flaw in the system is that the guides tend to exclude the smaller, newer, or lesser known restaraunts... but perhaps this is because we Bostonians are a secretive lot who want to keep the real gems for ourselves... just kidding! In the back of every Zagat guide is a response card to send back to Zagat, so that your opinions can be included in the next issue.
